We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: a built-in bookshelf is a signifier of good taste when it comes to decorating your home. Any bookshelf is chic, but there’s something special and stately about the hulking gravitas of built-ins. Whether you love to stack your shelves to the brim or follow bookshelf trends and opt for something more edited, we here at ELLE Decor have seen our fair share of shelves.
Below, we took a look back in our archives to find the built-in bookshelves that have lined the walls of bedrooms, living rooms, and libraries in some of our favorite homes. Whether your bookshelf style is minimal or maximal, you’re sure to find some shelves that strike your fancy.

When in doubt, add a bookshelf. It’s a great way to fill out annoying dead space or an awkward swath of wall—like what Barry Bordelon and Jordan Slocum of design duo The Brownstone Boys did in this Bed-Stuy home. The pair custom-made this bookcase by carving into the brownstone’s original walls, turning once empty hallway space into a “library-like sanctuary.”
