These four bathroom remodels show how thoughtful design can solve big problems in modest-size spaces. Whether it’s reworking a cramped layout, planning for aging in place or giving kids room to grow, each project takes a dated, dysfunctional setup and turns it into a stylish, hardworking retreat in under 100 square feet. See how the pros created better flow, added personality and functionality and made the most of each footprint.
1. Rustic Lodge Style and a Love Story
Bathroom at a Glance
Who lives here: An empty-nest couple
Location: Coupeville, Washington
Size: 96 square feet (8.9 square meters); 8 feet, 4 inches by 11 feet, 6 inches
Before: The owner of this rustic log home with sweeping water views in Coupeville, Washington, bought it as a weekend getaway and investment property. She wanted to give the aging home a modern lodge feel, and she first focused on updating the 1980s en suite primary bathroom.
The 96-square-foot space felt cramped, with a bulky built-in corner tub wedged between a small shower stall and a basic vanity. Dated materials added to the lack of style. To help create a more inviting look while preserving the home’s charm, she brought in designer Kristine Tyler.
