Texas designer Jennifer Kizzee’s two teenage boys were ready for an updated bathroom that could grow with them into adulthood. “Besides being unappealing, the shower-tub combo lacked functionality and personality,” Kizzee says of the former space. “Additionally, there were issues with the window, ventilation and water pressure that gave us more reasons to transform it into a whole bath experience.”

Kizzee ditched the shower-tub combo for a spacious new low-curb shower with a steam function. She used a weathered wood floating vanity from Houzz with a gray stone-look countertop as her starting point for creating a moody, contemporary style. Black marble-look porcelain wall tiles create a dramatic backdrop and coordinate with other bold black details. Slatted wood-look tile in the shower adds visual texture and interest. Two additional tile looks maximize style in the 45-square-foot space.

Even though she was her own client, along with her boys, Kizzee approached the design process as she would for any project and started by looking at the inspiration. “Just seeing what speaks to us, and then think about the function. What are some of the elements that are lacking, and how we can make it 10 times better,” she says.
