A lack of storage and a two-tier island made this upstate New York kitchen feel cramped and cluttered. The homeowners — he’s a retired engineer, she’s a federal worker who loves to bake — enjoy showcasing finds from their extensive travels. Initially they considered refacing their dark green-and-wood cabinets for a quick refresh, but after a consultation with designer and general contractor Marianne A. Clifford, they opted for a full renovation to boost function, storage and style.

A spacious one-level island with seating now anchors the room, creating a hub for casual meals and entertaining. Semicustom flat-panel cherry cabinets mix open and closed storage for cookware and collectibles. A new wall unit hides an appliance garage, breakfast bar and baking center behind sleek doors. Leathered American Black granite counters and backsplash, plus a stained red oak floor, complete the update, giving the kitchen a warm yet modern feel.

Clifford removed the old appliances, cabinets, counters and floor, along with the two-level island, making way for a more than 12-foot-wide, one-level island with seating and storage. “It offers a lot more options on how the island can be used,” she says. The new layout improves sightlines and makes the kitchen feel open and inviting.
