A master at layering periods and styles in a way that felt effortless, designer Richard Hallberg arrived on the Los Angeles design scene in the late 1970s and became synonymous with an unfussy elegance that spread well beyond the Pacific coast. When Hallberg and his partners Barbara Wiseley and Dan Cuevas launched a furniture line, Formations, and took over the esteemed midcentury showroom Dennis & Leen in the ’80s, both became indispensable trade-only resources. Top designers such as Holly Hunt, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, and Timothy Corrigan sought them out for furnishings and accents rooted in classicism but articulated through a contemporary lens.
Last August news broke that Formations and Dennis & Leen, as well as Michael Taylor Designs, another giant of West Coast design, had been acquired by RH to form part of RH Estates, a tradition-emphasizing bookend to RH’s more modern lines. Now the fast-expanding luxury retail giant has unveiled the first RH Estates offerings—available to all consumers.
